Australian Native Fascinator
An Australian Native Fascinator is the perfect accessory for spring! You can easily make one using a headband and native flowers in your garden.
Australia has a number of native flowers to choose from to make your headpiece. Did you know the Hibiscus is a native flower to Australia? This is the native flower we have growing in our front garden and their delightful orange petals add a dopamine hit of colour to our front yard.
Fascinators are an accessory worn to formal functions like racing carnivals or gala events. And even though these events aren’t typically for the kids, it doesn’t mean we can’t make our very own accessory to wear ‘just because.’ A fascinator can also be worn for imaginative play in a garden or park.
A craft like this is a fun project to do on school holidays or on the weekend for a creative project.
Materials to make an Australian Native Fascinator
- Secateurs
- Australian native leaves and flowers
- Pipe cleaners
- Headband
Instructions
STEP 1: Select a flower and leaves to create an arrangement. Place leaves as the first layer and then add your flowers. You can use gumnuts, but I decided to leave these out as they added weight to the headband.
STEP 2: Use a pipe cleaner to wrap around the stems of your arrangement so it stays in place.
STEP 3: Wrap the rest of the pipe cleaner around your headband to secure the flowers and leaves to create your fascinator.
Making a fascinator is a fun craft activity for a party or to wear to a special occasion.
