Make a Birds Nest Paper Plate Craft for Storytelling
This Birds Nest Paper Plate Craft is such a fun collage craft to make. But there is more to this craft than meets the eye!
As the saying goes, “Pictures tell a thousand words” and May Gibbs certainly exemplified this through her art which accompanied the adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie.
Craft can also be used for storytelling and this craft can be interwoven into children’s imaginations to think about the ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘how’ of this sweet bird scene.
While making this craft, get kids to start and finish the story on what is happening with these baby birds. Are they fighting? Could they be waiting for their mother? Are there other birds in the family?
Visual art works hand-in-hand with storytelling, and it’s another way to develop reading and writing skills in children, while practising their creativity and fine motor skills, too!
Materials for Birds Nest Paper Plate Craft
- Paper plate
- Paint brush
- Blue and white paint
- Ice cream container lid
- Craft glue
- Cotton balls
- Googly eyes
- Feathers
- Sticks, leaves, recycled paper fill
- Scissors
- Cardboard nose
Instructions
- STEP 1: Gather your materials. Gather sticks and leaves for the nest and blue paint for the blue sky.
- STEP 2: Paint half the paper plate blue.
- STEP 3: While the painted plate is drying, make your little birds by sculpting a cotton ball into a bird shape. Glue an eye, some feathers and a beak to create your little bird. Make as many as you like for your nest. You might like to think about the characters in your story to determine how many birds to make.
- STEP 4: Paint craft glue on the other half of the plate. This will be for the nest.
- STEP 5: Add leaves, sticks and paper filler to the bottom of the plate to create the nest.
- STEP 6: Glue your birds into the nest.
You now have a collage you can hang on the wall and use as a visual aid to write your story.
