It’s raining, the kids are upset because they can’t go outside and play, or perhaps your plans for a day at the beach have changed, so what do you do?

Pick up a book, of course!

There are so many fantastic books out there that will help your kids find the magic and the fun in a rainy day – they’ll soon forget all about what the rain has prevented them from doing and find new ways of entertaining themselves.

Books make rainy days magic!

There’s not much books can’t do, and that includes turning frowns upside down on rainy days! Here are some fabulous picture books to discover with your little one.

The Rainy Day by Anna Milbourne

This book is a fabulous example of how rainy days can be made fun again. What small child doesn’t like splashing around in puddles? The three children in this story love rainy days. They pull out their gumboots and their raincoats and venture out to explore. In rhyming text and through beautiful illustrations, this book explores the delights of a rainy day, from stomping in puddles, noticing which animals hide and which come out into the rain, to seeing a beautiful rainbow appear in the sky.

Worm Weather by Jean Taft

In this picture book, a boy and girl go for a puddle-filled walk in the rain. Through simple rhymes, watch as these children stomp and run their way through the rain while earthworms wriggle beneath the surface. This playful story will leave every reader aching to run outside and stomp in puddles!

Rain by Sam Usher

In this book, the rain becomes a character itself through the magic of one little boy’s imagination. When it starts to rain, Sam is delighted by the possibilities his imagination comes up with for adventure. But it’s absolutely bucketing down so his Granddad says they need to stay inside until it stops. Sam’s imagination kicks into gear again, and he daydreams about all the rain-soaked antics he could get up to – and then Granddad says they need to go out to post a letter. This story is a wonder-filled journey that enchants with every turn of the page.

BONUS BOOK: Today We Have No Plans by Jane Godwin

A family of five in suburban Australia gets through their busy week as best as they can, but when Sunday finally comes, no one has any plans! What to do? Sigh with relief, of course! This book is perfect for a rainy day as the reader discovers you don’t need to have anything planned to have fun.
