Make Dad a Sweet Treat this Father’s Day
If you’re after a budget friendly, simple sweet treat to give dad this Father’s Day, why not make honeycomb using Australian made honey?
I honestly haven’t stopped snacking on this since I made it. Oops. Lucky it’s quite easy to make another batch!
The father figures in your life will certainly enjoy this treat, no doubt about it. It’s also a cost effective gift idea as a little goes a long way. It’s especially great if you have a few dads to celebrate with.
This honeycomb is delightfully moreish. You can coat it with chocolate for an extra sweetness, but I liked the rustic look of the honeycomb given as a gift.
Ingredients for Honeycomb
- 1 cup of caster sugar (equates to 150grams)
- 2 tablespoons of Australian honey
- ½ cup of Australian golden syrup (equates to 60 grams)
- 2 teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda
- Wooden spoon
- Lined 20cm x 20cm baking tray
- Heavy duty pan
Instructions
STEP 1: Pour caster sugar, honey and golden syrup into the heavy pan and place this on your stove top on low heat. Use the wooden spoon to mix so the sugar dissolves and to get a golden consistency.
STEP 2: Keep the pan on low heat and stir to ensure sugar is dissolved. The mixture will start to bubble. I allowed the mixture to bubble for a few minutes. If you have a sugar thermometer, remove from heat once mixture hits 150 degrees Celsius.
STEP 3: Remove pan from the heat and sprinkle the bicarbonate of soda into the mixture. Keep mixing as it will puff up. Ensure the bicarbonate of soda is mixed through well.
STEP 4: Quickly pour the honeycomb mix into your prepared tray and allow to cool. I placed the tray into the fridge to hurry the cooling process.
Once the honeycomb is cool, remove from the tray and drop it onto a bench to create shards of honeycomb.
You can place the honeycomb in confectionary bags or in a sealed jar to give as gifts.
