Pine Cone Christmas Tree Craft for the Family
A favourite Aussie Christmas craft tradition in my family growing up was collecting pine cones and decorating them with glitter pom poms.
The pine cones could be hung on the Christmas tree with some string or placed in a bowl as a decoration.
There are so many ways to decorate a pine cone. Some fun ideas are
- *Spray paint your pine cone gold or silver
- *Cut each pine cone in half and arrange on a wreath for a textured, rustic look
- *Turn a pine cone into a reindeer or penguin
- *Paint each pine cone leaf with white for a snow drip effect
We had an abundance of pine cones from our winter season as we use them for our fire pit.
For this craft, we decided to recycle some items from a recent party to turn our pine cones into Christmas Trees!
Materials for Pine Cone Christmas Trees
- Pine cones
- Wine corks
- Scissors
- Knife (not pictured)
- Glue
- Ice cream container lid
- Paint brushes
- Green paint
- Silver and gold paint
- Gold card – to make a star
- Pom poms – for decorations
Instructions
- 1. Use a sharp knife to cut the wine cork in half as this will be the base of the tree.
- 2. Glue the cork to the bottom of each pine cone to create your tree.
- 3. Paint each section of the pine cone green for the Christmas tree branches. Allow to dry.
- 4. Paint glitter on your green pine cone tree to act as lights or tinsel.
- 5. Use scissors to cut a star shape from gold cardboard. We had spare gold paper plates and used a star hole punch to create our stars. You can simply draw a star shape on the cardboard and cut out with scissors.
- 6. Glue the star to the top of the pine cone to create your Christmas tree. You may decide to keep your Christmas tree as it is for a rustic décor piece or you can insert pompoms for colour.
This craft was so fun to make as a family. It brought back childhood memories for me decorating pine cones for Christmas. Crafts can make the best childhood memories for Christmas. Check out other Christmas crafts to make together as a family.
