The end of the year is swiftly approaching, and the school holidays with it, so we’ve come up with a list of the best books published this year to keep your little ones amused all summer long. This list ranges from funny picture books to fantasy books for older kids, so there’s something to suit every taste.
The best kids books of 2022!
Pig the Rebel by Aaron Blabey
What “best books of the year” list would be complete without the latest Pig the Pug? In this latest (hilarious!) instalment, Pig’s terrible behaviour has finally caught up to him – he’s been sent to obedience school. Do you think this pug can ever be redeemed? Not if he has anything to say about it! Suitable for ages 3 – 9.
That Cat by Jacqueline Harvey and Kate Isobel
For a delightful rhyming book that is purrfect for little ones aged from 3 – 5, look no further than That Cat by prolific children’s author Jacqueline Harvey – author of Australian favourites Alice-Miranda, Clementine Rose, and Kensy and Max.
There is nothing quite like a cat. There are fat cats, brat cats, mat cats, and rat cats, but if there’s one cat that everybody knows, it’s THAT cat. The rhyming is fantastic for language development, and the illustrations are amusing and entertaining.
The Tree at Number 43 by Jess McGeachin
This is an inspirational story about conservation, determination, the magic of nature, and the importance of grandads. In this story, Sam and his Grandad yearn for the magic of the jungle while stuck in the noisy, grey city. When their dream miraculously comes true, will they be able to protect it?
This is a book for parents and grandparents alike to share and enjoy with their children, to inspire and educate them about conservation, the intoxicating magic of wild places and green spaces, and the magic we can weave when we work together. Recommended for children aged 3 – 5.
Aliens and Other Worlds: True Tales From Our Solar System and Beyond by Lisa Harvey-Smith
For children who love to learn, or just prefer non-fiction, this is the book for them!
Are there living things on planets outside our solar system? What would they look like? Would they be curious, or smart, or even scared? Would they want to meet us? Did life arrive on Earth from a meteorite from outer space? This book reveals the wonders of scientific inquiry and guides Earthlings young and old through a search for alien life, pondering whether they might already be among us. Written by an astrophysicist, your budding young astronomer will be captivated and inspired. Suitable for kids 7 – 12 years old.
